Microsoft Excel is often used just for maintaining lists and trackers of any kind such as inventory lists, to do lists, item lists, expenses lists, telephone lists, member lists, attendance trackers, grade trackers, medication logs, scorecards for your favorite sport and much much more.

But don´t you think that using Excel for such purposes is not the right choice ? Excel is much too powerfull for these tasks, much too expensive and overwhelms you with menus, commands, functions and dialogues you won´t need for keeping just a list of things. Plus Excel isn´t ideal for large lists, since it´s more a spreadsheet than a database. With large lists Excel can get really slow.

Formulas

Here are some examples of formulas List vX can calculate plus we give you a short description how to handle formulas in the software.

Calculating formulas works a bit different from Excel. In Excel you normally see the result of a formula and have to click into the cell to see the formula itself. In List vX it´s the other way round. You always see the formula and if you go to the result or form view you see the result. If you want to turn the formula into a static result, click the Calculate-button on the bottom and the formula will be exchanged by it´s result.

Adding

If you want to add the values of column C and D and column E of a row, then the formula simply is

C+D

If you want to calculate the sum of all values in a column, for example column C, the formula is

sum(column::C)

Subtraction, Multiplication, Division

Substraction, Multiplication and Division work simply too:

A-D
D*B
C/E

and you get the respective results.

You can even use bracket terms such as

(A+D)*C

and get the correct result.

Advanced functions

There is a whole bunch of advanced functions you can use.

Aggregate functions such as Min, Max, Average, Variance and StDev (standard deviation) for calculating these statistical values for columns:

average(column::D)

There are Date-functions such as DayName, MonthName and WeekofYear that work with date values in a cell.
